Bates Bikes is very much a leader of the community. It’s owner, Phill Bates AM, has been honoured with the Order of Australia in 1999 for his outstanding achievements in cycling and raising funds for charitable organisations.

Phill Bates has also been awarded Hurstville Citizen of the Year in 2000 and is a member and Chairman of the Hurstville Community Committee for 20 years, involving staging the 1987 Hurstville Centenary and the 1988 Hurstville Bicentennial Celebrations.

Phill Bates AM, has been the Chairman of the Centenary of Australian Celebrations of St. George region, is a sponsor of the St. George Cycling Club, St. George Cricket and St. George District Aussie Rules Club, Gymea Soccer Club and St. George Rugby Leagues club. Bates Bikes also sponsors various charitable organisations and provides outstanding assistance to many community organisations providing facilities for events.

The organisation has supported the staging of the Fred Hollows Foundation, Victor Chang Cardiac research, Prince of Wales Oncology Department, Rotary Wing of the Westmead Childrens ‘Hospital, St. George Hospital Bed Race and the establishment of the Cancer Care Lodge at St. George.

More recently, Phill Bates has been devoting his time towards the establishment of the first ever Prostate Cancer Institute, that will be located at the St. George Cancer Care Centre at St. George Hospital..
